Walking with caterpillars is like laying an infinitely extended track for the tank, enabling it to pass various complex road conditions smoothly, quickly, and safely. Due to the large grounding area, the tank's passage on soft and muddy roads is increased. Ability to reduce the amount of sag. Because the track board has patterns and can be installed with spurs, it can firmly grasp the ground on rain, snow, ice, or uphill roads without slipping. Since the track grounding length is 4-6 meters and the center position of the inducer is relatively high, the ability to pass trenches and vertical walls are relatively strong. Generally, the trench width of a tank can reach 2 to 3 meters, and it can pass through a vertical wall of 1 meter high. The crawler track also has a special function. When crossing the river, it uses submerged crossing to walk on the bottom of the river; if it is a floating crossing track, it can generate propulsion like a propeller to drive the vehicle forward.

Three forms of crawlers:
The monolithic track is made by casting or forging methods, and the productivity is not high, but the shape of the grounding part is relatively easy to determine.
The shape of each component of the combined track is relatively simple, the productivity is high, and it is also suitable for embedding many rubber pads. Therefore, the combined track has become the mainstream of modern tank tracks.
The belt-shaped crawler has the characteristics of lightweight, but its shortcoming is that the strength lags behind the overall and combined crawler, so it can only be used on special vehicles such as snowmobiles and lighter vehicles.

From the structural point of view, the tank track is not as simple as it seems. In order to make the tank run, the track needs to work together with some other accessories to solve the various complex situations that may be encountered during the driving process. These devices that work together with the crawlers are "accessory devices", which mainly include rubber pads to protect the road, snow chains for driving on snow, and auxiliary crawlers to reduce ground pressure when driving on wet ground.

Crawler chassis is roughly divided into two types: 1. Rubber crawler chassis, 2. Steel crawler chassis

Rubber crawler: A rubber crawler is a crawler made of rubber and skeleton materials. It is widely used in construction machinery, agricultural machinery, and military equipment.

Matters needing attention for rubber track
(1) The operating temperature of the rubber track is generally between -25 and +55'C.
(2) Chemicals, engine oil, and salt in seawater will accelerate the aging of the crawler. Clean the crawler after use in such an environment.
(3) The road surface with sharp protrusions (such as steel bars, stones, etc.) can cause trauma to the rubber track.
(4) The curbstone, rut, or uneven road surface of the road will cause cracks in the pattern on the grounding side of the crawler edge. Such cracks can continue to be used if the steel cord is not damaged.
(5) Sand and gravel roads will cause early wear and tear on the rubber surface in contact with the load-bearing wheels, forming small cracks. In severe cases, the water invades, causing the core iron to fall off and the steel wire to break.

Relatively speaking, the use range and life span of steel tracks and the choice of working conditions are wider.
It is composed of steel tracks, crawler wheels, guide wheels, supporting wheels, chassis, and two traveling reducers (traveling reducers are composed of motors, gearboxes, brakes, and valve bodies). Generally, for example, the drilling rig is arranged on the chassis as a whole, and the walking speed of the crawler chassis is adjusted by the control handle so that the whole machine can realize convenient movement, turning, climbing, and walking.
